As part of our global Future Talent Programme – an initiative created to develop the next generation of engineering talent around the world – we have opened two new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Innovation Labs in India, with a further two to be opened later this year.
Working in partnership with SRF Foundation in Oragadam and Learning Links Foundation in Bangalore, non-profit organisations dedicated to improving education for vulnerable communities in India, the new Innovation Labs were opened in Kancheepuram District, Oragadam, and Bangalore, with the further two labs to be opened in Oragadam later this year.
Informed by our commitment to deliver a positive impact on our local communities, the Innovation Labs seek to address the growing skills shortage of engineers in India by creating inclusive opportunities, providing new infrastructure and science curriculums, and mentoring local teachers to support the people of India and develop the next generation of talented engineers.
Providing access to electronic tools in a safe environment, alongside mechanical kits and rapid prototyping equipment, the Innovation Labs will deliver first-hand, practical experiences to spark curiosity and help build the skills of tomorrow.
The first Innovation Lab, opened at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Padappai, Oragadam, was inaugurated by Tom Salisbury, Director of Sustainability, who commented:
"
GKN Automotive’s Future Talent Programme is all about nurturing tomorrow’s talent today, and this latest investment will positively contribute to the local community in Oragadam. STEM education is essential for fuelling the innovation the world needs to tackle some of the challenges we collectively face. These Innovation Labs allow local students to expand their knowledge, develop critical thinking, and nurture creativity in a safe space.
”
We look forward to coordinating further projects in the areas in which we operate to ensure we remain a positive influence, demonstrating clear positive impact, in our local communities.
